Most families that come to me for their newborn photography sessions are first time parents. We spend most of their time with me focusing on the brand new little bundle that has just arrived and brought so much love but turned their entire lives upside down.
But what about when you already have children? Many families would still like their older child(ren) involved in their newborn photography session and of course it's my job to help with this.
Whilst most older siblings are happy to come over and have a photo taken with the new addition to their family, the typical 2 year old is not.
With this in mind, I thought it would be really helpful for you all to see just what happens when they don't want to "pose" for the silbing photo that I have set up, and how I manage to still create such beautiful natural photographs of your precious babies together.
I met a lovely family a few weeks ago who had booked a newborn photography session for their second child and of course wanted to bring their older child with them to involve him too. A newborn session can last for up to 4 hours so I always recommend to everyone before hand if possible, that they bring their older child either for the start of the session or towards the end so we can get those all important sibling photos and they don't have to wait around all that time as it can be boring for them. Of course this is not always possible for some families and they are welcome to stay if they need to.
When I am expecting a sibling I tend to set up for photos of them together at the beginning and if this fails we come back at the end of the session. This certain little man was not too keen to joining his baby sister in the photo taking. He was still sussing out life with a brand new baby sister and at 2 years old is still very much a baby himself, he was in a strange place, and whilst I always try my best to help them feel more comfortable, if you have or have had a toddler yourself you will know this isn't always possible. His baby sister patiently waited whilst we tried to persuade him over but he wasn't coming in this instance. No worries, I move on and take this opportunity to take a few photos of his baby sister so he can see whats going on and feel a little more settled. He watches from a distance and starts showing a little more interest.
After a few more photographs of his baby sister, he decides he would like to come over and join her, but not to lay down on my specially set out blanket on the floor so I have to improvise. I decided to try something a little different and I am sure you will agree, the results were amazing. The photographs are all completely natural, he came over in his own time and you can really see the love between them.
We did "plan" to try some slightly more posed siblings photos again towards to the end of the session but Dad took him to the park and he fell asleep in the car so he spent the remainder of their time with me asleep! aaaaaaaww.
So there you go, things don't always go to plan. And not just for sibling sessions, for newborns on their own too , every baby and every child has their own schedule and agenda and they don't run by ours, which is why every single one of my sessions from newborn, to family and all the babies in between are completely led by you, not me. My aim is to capture your family, as they are , beautifully and naturally and to make this into beautiful memories that you will treasure forever.
If you are expecting again please take a look at my newborn photography section or drop me a message I would love to chat about your session.
Dad's and their babies. Not so commonly talked about and shown in newborn photography as we may think. After all, its usually Mum who takes lead and spends hours looking online for their perfect photographer.
But how do they feel about all this, what do they think?
Do they mostly come along to the session for support, or because they are told to or are they equally involved?
With some exceptions it is usually Mum to be/new Mum who gets in touch to arrange their newborn photography session and whilst it is usually a joint decision, Mum usually initiates this. Usually Dad does come along if they are still on paternity leave which is a great reason to have your newborn photography session as early as possible.
Whilst some Dad's are more than happy to be photographed, and in some cases it can be them to suggest it rather than Mum, just as many, if not more are very anxious about it all. I want to help you to relax and put your mind at ease if it something you are currently or may soon be thinking about. So with this in mind, I have spoken to two Dad's who I have photographed recently with their newborn babies when they came to Samantha Prewett Photography in Poole.
"I always remember being very nervous on the drive there, I was quite short with everyone in the car but we got there and seeing Edward just being allowed to be free and he was so cute, then I can remember being worried about the photo with me cause I was looking scruffy as a tramp with low standards but I held Edward and just looked down at him, and knew I needed this wonderful memory, and everyday I look at the canvas of our little family and just feel proud. I love the photos we have they always look so warm and just capture our pure love for Edward, I even quite like the way my bald spot looks"
"I was slightly apprehensive about having my photo taken as I'm self conscious and I always thought it was more of a 'mum and baby' thing which dads didn't generally get involved with. However towards the end of the shoot Samantha invited me to have a parent shot and, after seeing the lovely set-ups for Orla during the shoot, I felt more confident that the end result would be great. I actually felt very relaxed during the shoot and enjoyed spending time with my baby. Now I have beautiful photos with my little girl and, as she has grown so quickly, am very glad I took the opportunity while she was so tiny. I would definitely recommend having parent shots taken to other dads - it's not just a mum thing!"
I feel so privileged to have such wonderful clients who are happy to share such beautiful personal thoughts with me, I hope these wonderful Dad's help you when you are planning your newborn photography session and you consider having a photograph with your newborn baby, they are only this tiny for a really small amount of time. I would like to thank both Graeme and Rob for their beautiful words. I couldn't have written this article without you both.
So what do you think? Did you have a photograph with you baby during your newborn photography session? or are you ready to book your newborn session, and have some beautiful timeless photos with your baby which you will treasure forever.
Please don't feel pressured though, every session goes by your and your babies pace, what ever you want is always good for me, and I still do quite a few newborn sessions with no parent photos at all, especially if you are planning a family session soon and have other children. If you do choose to have parent shots, your newborn session is focused around your little bundle so you will only be in the "spotlight" for a few minutes and you can relax for the rest of the time you are here.
So if you are ready to find out more about a Newborn photography session with me, I have more blog posts crammed with useful information under my newborn category or you can visit the newborn section of my website here. And please do get in touch if I can help you plan your newborn session further. Thank you.
It has been over 6 months since I shared an entire newborn photography gallery with you all , so I thought it was about time to "update" with a new one. Not because I don't like the other images anymore, neither have they gone "out of date" , but because I love showing you how different every session is. I also think its really important if you are looking for a newborn photographer that you see this, rather than simply the "best" of their images which feature on their website/social media.
This gorgeous little man was 12 days old when he came to see me here at Samantha Prewett Photography in Poole. I usually photograph newborns around 7 days (but anything up to 2-3 weeks is good), he arrived on Christmas eve so I gave him the first slot I have available for 2018.
We started off with some wrapped up photos, as you can see he was so content that this sent him back to sleep, aaaaawwww.
Some babies take a while to settle in when the arrive, but he was very content. Your session is totally baby led, I work with your baby when you come in so I never have a set list to take certain photos in a certain order. Sometimes we start with lots of cuddles and settling, sometimes your little bundle is ready for photos straight away. Every baby is different.
After the first set of photos, he was wide awake and still very content and happy, time for some awake shots. Whilst we all love curled up sleepy baby photos, I simply adore awake ones too where you can see their bright eyes. A perfect session provides a balance between the two,
After the second set up, he was still not ready to sleep. But that does not matter, I have plenty of ways to photograph both awake and asleep babies. So we moved onto the next lot of photos, again he was wide awake and we got to see his gorgeous eyes.
After these photos, we all decided it might be time for little one to go to sleep. Mum and Dad were particularly set on some certain images where had to be asleep, so I wrapped him up and helped him and he fell asleep. This does not always happen, so please don't worry if it does not, we will still get some beautiful photographs.
To finish up the session, as requested, we did some parent photos. Most of my clients have photos with their babies, but some are not ready. Again this is totally your decision, but I do urge you all to definitely consider letting me capture a photo of yourself with your newborn. If you are not keen when you see your gallery, you don't need to choose it.
If you decide to have parent photos whilst you are here, you might end up with a large selection to choose from as I like to leave the decision making to you!
Their session was absolutely perfect and I could not wait to start editing these gorgeous images. Somehow they have managed to choose their favourite 10 images, via their private online gallery which have now been ordered and will be on their way to them really soon.
I would like to thank this lovely family for letting me share their gorgeous photographs with them all. I am really looking forward to organising and sending their prints and USB over soon.
If you are expecting a baby this year, now is the perfect time to "book" in your newborn photography session. If you book before 36 weeks I have a brand new offer where you can claim a free wooden photo block with your photography package, worth £30! Please contact me for more information on this amazing offer or if you would like to read more about newborn photography with me in Poole, Dorset you can visit the newborn section of my website here.
It has been almost 1 year now since I started #LittlePacksOfLove.
Along the way a few companies have left us , and a few more great ones have joined in, but the same few of us continue to meet up every 2 months to put these beautiful little packs together. I now make these packs up with the lovely Sophie from Puddle Ducks Dorset, I am really excited to start working together.
Little packs of love is a Dorset not for profit project that sets out to give local mums to be and new mums with babies up to 12 months old lots of useful offers and samples from other baby related businesses. It is so much more than just a pack of leaflets, each local company who contributes to these includes an exclusive offer, and we have goodies and samples in each pack too. The packs then get handed out to our clients and also they get handed out at local baby events that we attend.
As you can imagine things always change in a year. For us change has been for the better! I decided that I would like to get larger companies involved, and to my amazement the support we have received from such huge companies has been outstanding. Currently JoJoMaman Bebe are supplying us with bags, which I am sure you can all agree look beautiful. And lots of other amazing brands such as Pregnacare, Bio Oil, Water Wipes, Jackson Reece, Pukka Tea, Dorset Tea, and Bepanthen have sent me goodies to include in our packs!
If you would like to find out about some of the fabulous local businesses contributing to these little packs of love , please visit my Dorset Baby Directory.
So we ask again, what does the future hold for little packs of love? Well who knows! They are still going to be kept small and local and handed out to our clients but want to create a community so we are currently thinking about a group where we are bring together the new parents in Poole and provide them with useful information and promotions for our services.
Meanwhile if you would like a pack and have not yet had one, please do get in touch with me.

A newborn lifestyle or "fresh 48" session takes place in your home soon after you baby has arrived. My main aim for these sessions is to capture the new addition to your family in his/her natural home surroundings.
For this session, at the request of the parents, I brought a small amount of props with me and managed to capture a beautiful mix of natural lifestyle and some slightly more "set up" images.
I met this gorgeous little man last month at his home in Poole, Dorset for his Fresh 48 photography session. He is very lucky indeed, to have 2 adoring older brothers, who were amazing at having their photos taken with him.
I was very lucky this home had a large window so I was in natural light heaven. I managed to get some gorgeous shots in front of the window before moving on to some family photographs.
I always aim to capture some natural shots during these lifestyle session, of you feeding, cuddling, interacting with your baby , and this is exactly what we managed to do.
There are so many beautiful photographs from this Fresh 48 session, I can't possibly include them all on here. But Mum and Dad loved them so much, the decided to buy them all!
Newborn lifestyle photography sessions are becoming increasing popular, they are an even more natural way to capture your family , and they work perfectly if you already have children as they are always more comfortable in their own homes rather than coming into a strange new place. If you are expecting soon, and would like more information on a newborn photography session, please visit my newborn area of my website, or contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
This month I had the pleasure of photographing this gorgeous little one again for her 9 month session. I first met her back in January for her newborn photography session here at Samantha Prewett Photography in Poole, Dorset, and this month I photographed her at Upton County Park.
It was so lovely to see how much she has grown since January, I feel really privileged to be invited back to photograph babies as they grow and capture these special memories for their families to treasure forever.
We started off with a few photos of her and her gorgeous Mummy together, which I am sure you agree are beautiful.
Then we took some photos of her on her own in a little wooden box, which she seemed to be quite happy in! Gorgeous don't you think?
Baby/family photography packages start from £85 and include some digital images. I tend to photograph outdoors between March and October. If you would like a session over the winter, I would suggest booking a family lifestyle home session, or if you baby is under 5 months I can photograph them here in Poole. If you are interested in booking a family session, you can find out more by visiting my family photography section on my website ,or you can contact me.
Something that I feel very passionately about is the "natural" part of my brand. This is where I think I differ from the majority of the hundreds of other newborn photographers out there.
So what exactly do I mean by "natural posing" ? Surely, anything "posed" can't be natural?
Well, I perfectly combine the 2 things to create beautiful photographs for you.
I "pose" babies by creating beautiful artistic setups of colours that compliment each other and your baby and placing them into these set ups. Then instead, of making sure each shot is "perfectly posed" I let your baby pose! Sometimes I give them a helping hand, but more often that not, the natural positions that they get themselves in are picture perfect already! I am there for all the little things like if they decide to put their hands over their face or to cover up their modesty!
Please don't get me wrong though, its not as simple as just setting up some things, putting your baby in then taking some photos! If you have been to me, you will understand and appreciate the care and attention that goes into each and every photograph that I take. I have over 4 years experience of photographing newborn babies now, and I know how to naturally work with your baby to create these perfect photographs that you will treasure forever.
Each baby is different and likes to go into different positions, here is the same "pose" with different babies, you can see how each baby is different and unique and how they want to position themselves differently. I tend to help them a little bit for this pose, but I will never put them into any positions where they need supporting by a hand that then needs to be edited out afterwards.
I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog that I really enjoyed putting together for you. If you would like to read more about my brand, I have a few other articles about my brand message here:

Ok, so the title of this post just gave it all away and you don't "need" to read more to find out what this article is all about, but please do, it has taken me hours and hours to compile this!
This September marks a huge milestone for me, whilst a lot of you will be getting ready for your babies starting school, I have been also celebrating the fact that the first babies I photographed 4 years ago are starting their school journeys this month.
To celebrate, I invited the little one's who I photographed as my first newborns 4 years ago to a little "I am starting school" session. Those of you who know me, know that I am not your typical "school/studio" photographer", so I decided to take them all to the beach! Their Mummies and Daddies were very brave allowing them onto the sand with their brand new precious school clothes and shoes, but I am sure you will agree it was definitely worth it and I hope they love these photos of their gorgeous little ones as much as I do.
I got quite emotional looking back at all my old photos to compile this blog post, I bet the families will too!
The three children that came were all absolutely amazing and seemed to enjoy themselves, and agreed that photo sessions on the beach are much more fun than in a studio! I got them to practice for their official school photos , which resulted in a few cheesy smiles but I managed to get some gorgeous natural ones aswell :-)
This lovely little man could have a whole blog of his own! I first photographed him whilst he was still in his Mummy's tummy, and have continued to photograph him and his family ever since. I have actually lost count how many sessions I have done for them, but I had a look through today and picked out a few photos to share of him from the past few years.
I would like to wish them all a super happy start to their new school journeys this month, and thank them for coming and doing this for me. It means a lot to have had all the support over the years and I hope its not the end of our time together. xx
This year myself and the lovely Emma from Sunflower Baby Massage created #littlepacksoflove.
We work closely with a number of other maternity and baby related businesses who, like us are all based in Dorset to create these lovely little packs to give out to our clients.
We are currently planning batch 4, which will be ready to give out in September 2017. Every 2 months we get together with a few other lovely ladies to put our packs together. Each pack contains flyers with an exclusive offer on, goodies and samples for local businesses. This is a not for profit project, the idea is to create little goody packs that we can all hand out to our own clients, and for them to be useful, not just bags of flyers. We like to think of them as local bounty packs.
Some of the regular contributors to the packs include ; Table Top Treasure nearly new sales across Dorset, Rock The Bump pregnant belly casting, Families Online, Butterfly Dreams bump painting, Daisy First Aid, Precious Memories baby castings, Jennie Stone International Business Coach, The Essential You essential oils, and many more. We are always looking out for new goodies to include in our packs, so if you can help, please do get in touch.
We always have a fun evening putting the together, each pack is handmade with lots of love inside. If you have been lucky enough to have one already, we hope that you liked it. They are currently being given out to our own clients and at events that we attend, which so far have included the Mothercare Expectant Parent Evenings, The Dorset Bump to Baby Show and at Table Top Treasure events. We are not yet ready to distribute them further as they take a lot of time to produce, and we want to keep them local, but who knows what the future holds for our little packs of love.
If you would like to find out more about the businesses contributing to our packs , please visit my Dorset Baby Directory Page.
